Chances are, that gorgeous ring is just burning a hole in your pocket as you nervously try to keep it out of sight. Maine is filled with magical, romantic places to stay, eat and explore—and it sets the perfect stage for a dreamy proposal destination. The city of Portland is just 20 minutes away from beautiful beaches, rocky coastlines, mountains and rustic fields. One of my most popular locations for Maine proposals is Portland Headlight at Fort Williams park in Cape Elizabeth.

This stunning park features beautiful lighthouse views, rocky ocean coastline, and sunlit fields. It can get busy during the peak hours of summer, so I recommend working with your engagement photographer to schedule a session based on the best light, often this is when the park opens for the day at sunrise or an hour from sunset.

Portland headlight is perfect every month of the year, but I personally love the tonality of the raw landscape November through May (the crowds are smaller too). There’s something so romantic about winter proposals and cold Maine air. If you choose Portland Headlight for your proposal location, you won’t be disappointed.

Down the road from Portland Headlight, are two more of my favorite parks, Kettle Cove, which has the most amazing sunsets and two lights, which is a misnomer, there isn’t a lighthouse, but some of the most beauty rocky cliffs and dramatic waves.

You might be feeling overwhelmed by all the logistics that go into planning a surprise engagement session, just leave that to your talented photographer. Typically there are two options when documenting a proposal in secret; you can either tell your partner that you’ve booked a couple session together and propose during it, or you can go the route of 100% secrecy and have your photographer stealthy capture your proposal and do a surprise session afterwards. There are benefits to both, but I truly love capturing proposals in secret.
